September 30, 2026 — Trusting the Drift
Share
Imagine turning off your outboard engine right in the middle of a wide-open bay. The wind is blowing gently, and you drop your drift sock into the water to slow your pace. As your boat begins to glide across a deep mud-and-shell flat, you cannot see what lies directly beneath you in the murky green water. You have to trust the wind and the current to carry you over the hidden reefs where the fish are holding. If you panic and constantly start the engine to move, you will spook the schools and ruin your chance at a good catch. You have to let go of the steering wheel and trust the drift.
It is incredibly hard for us to let go of control in our daily lives. When we face financial stress, family issues, or an uncertain future, our first instinct is to force our own solutions and fix things on our own timeline. We get anxious because we cannot see what lies ahead. But God asks us to rest in His current. He wants us to trust that His Holy Spirit is guiding our lives over the right spots, even when we feel completely blind. Letting go of the controls isn't quitting; it is an act of total faith in the One who rules the wind and the water.
"Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways submit to him, and he will make your paths straight." — Proverbs 3:5-6
Look at the situations you are trying to force or micromanage this week. Intentionally take your hands off the steering wheel through prayer. Choose to trust God's timing and direction, and allow His peace to steady your heart while He guides your path.
Father, I confess that I love to be in control, and I get anxious when I cannot see what is coming next. Today, I turn off my own striving and trust Your direction for my life. Guide my steps, calm my worries, and help me rest in the knowledge that You are leading me exactly where I need to go. Amen.
