The Midday Shade

The Midday Shade

Paddling a fishing kayak through the tight backwater cuts of the Texas coastal marsh on an August afternoon is a lesson in total exposure. You are sitting low to the water, hunting for redfish tailing in the ankle-deep flats, surrounded only by low-lying salt grass that offers zero cover. The midday sun blazes down relentlessly, while the glassy water acts like a giant mirror, reflecting the heat straight back at you. It burns from above and below. Your skin blisters, sweat stings your eyes, and the blinding glare leaves your mind foggy as you struggle to make another cast.

In those grueling hours in the marsh, relief comes down to finding structure. Gliding under the heavy timbers of an overhanging wooden dock, slipping beneath a concrete bridge piling, or resting in the shade of a causeway structure brings instant relief. The glare drops away, the temperature cools down, and your focus sharpens. The shade changes everything.

Psalm 91:1 reminds us, "Whoever dwells in the shelter of the Most High will rest in the shadow of the Almighty." Out in the daily grind, we often paddle through life completely exposed. We navigate open waters flooded with criticism, stress, and anxiety, trying to shoulder the full heat of our problems on our own strength. But God never intended for us to battle the elements alone or live scorched by self-reliance.

He built a structural canopy of protection called His presence. God’s shadow is not a fragile cover; it is an unyielding refuge engineered to intercept the heat before it burns you. When you pause, pray, and surrender your worries to Him, you glide out of the blinding heat of self-sufficiency and step directly into the cool, protective shadow of the Almighty.

Identify the biggest worry burning your mind right now. Visually hand it over to God in prayer, choosing to rest safely under His protective shade today.

Lord, I am tired of trying to carry all my stress and worries on my own. It gets exhausting trying to fix everything in my own strength. Right now, I hand over the exact thing that has been burning my mind and hurting my heart. I place it in Your hands. Thank You for being my safe place to hide and rest. Help me stop worrying and let me rest under Your protection today.  In Jesus' name, Amen.
